From Hoima city, Bugoma Forest is 70kms away and it requires you to drive to the forest reserve from Kampala through Hoima-Fort Portal route and branch off to Kabwoya sub-country then finally Bugoma Forest passing through Kasindi Forest Station.

How to Get to Bugoma Forest by Road

Main route from Kampala. The most common route starts from Kampala. 

Route:

Kampala – Hoima (via Kampala–Hoima highway)

Hoima – Kabwoya Sub-county

Kabwoya – Kasindi Forest Station-Bugoma Forest

This is the primary and most recommended route

Distance and time

Distance: about 240–280 kms. Travel time: 4–5 hours, depending on road conditions

Key features:

  • Mostly tarmac road from Kampala to Hoima
  • Final stretch is a murram (dirt) road
  • Scenic views of rural western Uganda
  • Alternative route via Fort Portal
  • Another option is via Fort Portal

Branch to Bugoma via Kibale–Bugoma road

Distance and time

About 280 kms. Travel time: around 5 hours

This route is useful if combining travel with:

  • Kibale National Park (chimpanzee trekking)
  • Other western Uganda attractions
  • Access from Hoima (final approach)

Hoima is the nearest major town. Distance to forest: 50–70 km Travel time: about 1 hour

From Hoima: Take the Hoima–Kagadi road then turn off at Kabwoya and proceed to Kasindi Forest Station.

Note: Roads beyond Kabwoya are rough. A 4×4 vehicle is recommended, especially during rainy seasons

Getting to Bugoma Forest by Air

Although less common, air travel is possible to Bugoma Forest as you catch domestic flights which Depart from: Entebbe International Airport/ Kajjansi Airfield. You shall fly to Hoima Airstrip in a duration of 1 hour to Hoima airstrip. 

From Hoima Airstrip, continue by road (about 1 hour) to Bugoma Forest

This option is faster, more expensive and suitable for tourists on organized safaris.

Bugoma Forest is a 41,144-hectare tropical forest in Western Uganda (Hoima/Kikuube districts) managed by the National Forestry Authority. It was founded in 1932 protecting over 600 chimpanzees, 34 mammal species, and 260+ bird species.
