Lutoboka Central & Bujanzi Forest

Lutoboka Central Forest Reserve is a protected area in Uganda’s Eastern district of Kalangala seated on 174 hectares (430 acres) on Bugala Island. The forest reserve is situated on Uganda’s Ssese Islands and is home to a variety of plant and animal life, including trees, shrubs, herbs, birds, butterflies, and monkeys. Lutoboka forest reserve is also a popular tourist destination, offering visitors the opportunity to go for forest walks, bird watching, and primate viewing.

The Lutoboka Forest Reserve comprises of Piptadeniastrum and Uapaca species. These are ideal habitats for breeding birds and stretch towards the town. The forest is managed by the National Forestry Authority (NFA) which is responsible for its conservation and sustainable management. The NFA has a number of programs in place to protect the forest, including tree planting, anti-poaching patrols and community outreach programs.

The Forest Reserve was gazetted in 1930 in order to protect the area’s natural resources from a number of factors like deforestation, agricultural expansion and human encroachment.

These form a belt along the lower ridges with a gentle slope from a lakeshore to the centre. The forest walks here are not so established although are well developed and the visitors from Lutoboka should not miss a trail that extends from the landing site up the fort where Henry Morton Stanley inclined camp in his way to the mountains of the moon. There are more than 31 gazetted forest reserves with over 7, 324 hectares under the control of the national forestry Authority.

Travelers here enjoy activities like sailing, boating, sun bathing, fishing, forest walks, bird watching, primate watching, as well as butterfly identification along the shores of the lake. There are various beaches and resorts for both the upper market and middle market. Some of the beaches include; Pearl Gardens beach, Panorama camping site, Palm Beach hotel, Mirembe Resort beach as well as Ssese. These have access to the White sand beaches ideal for relaxation after a forest walk.

The reserve can be accessed by ship from Nakiwogo landing site close to Entebbe at 14 hours per day. The ship starts from Lutoboka landing site at 8 hours or on way reaching the island by ferry from Bukakata / Kachanga landing site near Masaka starting at 8 hours, the ferry docks at Luku landing site near Kalangala 4 times a day.
