About Bugoma Forest Reserve

Bugoma Forest Reserve is one of Uganda’s ideal tropical forests located in the western part of Uganda lying in Hoima District between Kyenjojo and Lake Albert along the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley.

It covers an area of 400–650 square kilometers (about 40,000–65,000 hectares) making it one of the largest remaining natural forests. It is under the management of the Uganda National Forestry Authority (since 2003) and found on an escarpment facing Lake Albert offering scenic views at the terrain landscape.

The vegetation in the forest is known as a tropical semi-deciduous rainforest that is dominated by Ironwood trees (Cynometra alexandri) a key species shaping forest structure, Mixed tropical hardwood species such as Khaya, Celtis and Trichilia, more than 260 plant species which are endemic to the Albertine Rift.

The forest is drained by many rivers i.e Waisoke, Sonso, Bubwa which feed into Lake Albert and support both wildlife and local communities.

In the forest, you can watch Wildlife animals too which include; primates i.e 600 chimpanzees, Grey-cheeked mangabeys, Black-and-white colobus monkeys.

Blue monkeys, Red-tailed monkeys, Vervet monkeys. Other mammals include; forest elephants, Buffaloes, Uganda kob, Golden cats, Jackals.

There are bird species too i.e more than 225 bird species are recorded and these include; the Nahan’s francolin (endangered), African crowned eagle, Grey parrot as well as more than 290 butterflies, 20 amphibian species, reptiles and insects.

Best Time to Visit Bugoma Forest Reserve

Bugoma Forest offers many things to do as travelers get a chance to engage in many activities. The forest can be visited anytime but the best time is during the dry season in the months of December to February, June to August because during these months, the Trails are less muddy and easier to walk, Better conditions for chimpanzee tracking and forest hikes, Wildlife is easier to spot since animals gather near water sources.

Reaching Bugoma Forest is direct as you proceed from Kampala or nearby western towns using road. The routes are;

  • Kampala → Hoima → Kabwoya → Bugoma Forest.
  • From Hoima Town (Closest Access Point)
  • Hoima → Kabwoya → Bugoma Forest (Kasindi Station)
  • Fort Portal → Kyenjojo → Kabwoya → Bugoma
