Projects at Bugoma Forest Reserve are many and these are done to promote conservation, research, eco-tourism and community livelihood around Bugoma Forest Reserve. The Conservation Projects at the forest reserve include;

Association for Conservation of Bugoma Forest (ACBF)

ACBF runs multiple long-term projects focused on protecting Bugoma Forest from illegal logging, charcoal burning, and encroachment.

Their work includes:
Forest patrols, Tree planting, Eco-tourism, Community awareness, Chimpanzee habitat protection. One of their flagship initiatives is the Chimp T-Rap Patrol Project launched in 2017 to reduce illegal activities inside the reserve.

Reforestation & Climate Projects

ACBF Reforestation Project

This project aims to restore degraded forest land around Bugoma through Native tree planting, Biodiversity restoration, Carbon absorption initiatives, Local community participation. The initiative reports involvement of local households and restoration of conserved acreage close to the reserve.

ECOTRUST Bio-Credits Program

The Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda (ECOTRUST) is implementing the Budongo–Bugoma Corridor Restoration Program, which Restore ecological corridors, Supports biodiversity credits (“biocredits”), Encourages sustainable livelihoods, Promotes climate resilience among local communities. Another ECOTRUST-led project focused on biodiversity conservation and climate resilience around Bugoma.

Bugoma Primate Conservation Project

This research initiative, led by researchers from the University of St Andrews and University of Geneva, studies Chimpanzee behavior, Ugandan mangabeys, Forest ecology, Human-wildlife coexistence. The project also supports conservation education and eco-tourism development with local stakeholders and Uganda’s forestry authorities.

About Bugoma Forest

Bugoma Forest is a 41,144-hectare tropical forest in Western Uganda (Hoima/Kikuube districts) managed by the National Forestry Authority. It was founded in 1932 protecting over 600 chimpanzees, 34 mammal species, and 260+ bird species.

Bugoma forest can be visited anytime around the year although the best time to visit the forest is during the drier seasons so that you can navigate through the dense forest trails.

Is it safe to visit Bugoma Forest?

Bugoma Forest area has faced tension due to conservation disputes with developers. However, it is a protected area under the National Forestry Authority (NFA) and tourism is actively managed in some zones.
